According to a study at the University of A Coruna, published in the European Journal of Public Health, children who are given paracetamol (active ingredient in Panadol, Panamax or Tylenol) are far more likely to develop asthma.

Children who are given paracetamol once a month are five times more at risk while even having it just once per year increases the chances by 70 percent. Children who had a dose of the medicine at any time before their first birthday were 60 per cent more at risk. The study also found that 13 and 14-year-olds were 40 per cent more likely to have asthma if they had taken paracetamol within the previous 12 months.

Researchers who studied 20,743 children say there is now growing evidence that the increasing rates may be linked to paracetemol. The academics say paracetamol may reduce levels of a chemical called glutathione in the lungs and blood, which results in damage to the lung tissue.

In Australia 1 in 10 people suffer from asthma, that is over 2 million people.

A joint Australian study by the University of Melbourne and Children’s Hospital surveyed 325 parents about their use of over-the-counter medication for children aged 0-24months. The researchers found that nearly all parents had given their children over the counter medications to combat pain and fever, and that paracetamol was the most commonly used drug (95.9%), with a couple of parents giving their children paracetamol only because their children were “cranky”.

I have observed and talked to many mothers both in my clinic and private life and I am shocked how quickly mothers reach for paracetamol. Children develop a fever very quickly, but the fever comes down just as quickly if you just let the body have a chance to deal with it. A “cranky” child is definitely no reason to give paracetamol, but unfortunately I have witnessed that as well.
